GOVERNMENT

The politics in the country takes place in the framework of a semi-presidential republic under a multiparty system. The powers of the state are divided into three: executive, legislative and judicial branch.

 

The executive branch is composed of the President, the Vice President and the Ministers. The President of the Republic is the head of state and government, the Vice President of the Republic is the collaborating body of the President of the Republic and the Ministers are the officials in charge of a specific area.

 

The legislative branch is composed by the National Assembly. It is composed of eight members, elected in universal, direct and secret elections. Its function is to debate, approve or reject proposed laws, as well as to appoint the officials established in the Constitution.

The judicial branch is composed by the Supreme Court and local courts. It is in charge of the judicial affairs of the country, in addition to carrying out judicial procedures in various areas.

MINISTERIAL CABINET

The ministerial cabinet is a governmental body whose main function is to direct the different ministries in which the administration of an executive power is organized. The ministerial cabinet meets on a regular basis. The President of the Republic has the obligation to form a ministerial cabinet, as well as the appointment and removal of the ministers that form part of the cabinet.

COUNCIL OF MINISTERS

The Council of Ministers is the executive body that constitutes the Government of the Republic. Its headed by the President of the Republic, who is the head of state and government. In the event that the President of the Republic is unable to preside over the Council of Ministers, the Vice President of the Republic may preside, under authorization.

The Council of Ministers meets with a fixed regularity and may also meet extraordinarily to discuss matters of utmost importance.
